The Repertoire of the Spanish & Portuguese tradition includes a number of ancient melodies whose origins may be traced to pre-expulsion Spain. A striking example of this is the piyut Yah Shema Ebyonecha.
Composed by R.Yehuda Halevi at the turn of the 11th century, this Piyut is a moving introduction to the
Selihot for the Minhah of Yom Kippur.
The midi files below illustrate how this ancient melody has evolved in different communities of both Eastern and Western Sephardi traditions.
