Judeo-Spanish Romancas
Two of the most influential personalities in the Spanish and Portuguese Congregation of London during the 20th century were Haham Dr Solomon Gaon and Hazzan Eliezer Abinun. Both were born in the former Ottoman Empire, growing up speaking the Judeo Spanish language and imbibing its culture. Sadly, perhaps, the community in London resisted their attempts at introducing melodies drawn from that repertoire into the synagogue service. They were, however, sung with great love and joy in their own homes.
